If you
want to
escape
from the
centre
of
Frankfurt,
or have
a laid-back
evening
out,
then
head for
Sachsenhausen
on the
south
bank of
the Main.
Although
it has
been
part of
Frankfurt
since
1318,
this
city-within-a-city
retains
a
distinctive
atmosphere.
It's
best
known as
the
"apple
wine
quarter",
in
honour
of its
most
famous
product,
which is
served
in
practically
every
bar in
the
area,
and it's
here
that
you'll
find
Frankfurt's
most
civilized
nightlife.
In
Schweizer
Strasse
there's
every
imaginable
kind of
speciality
shop,
while in
the old
Schlachthaus
(slaughterhouse)
on
Deutschherrnufer
(opposite
the
Flösserbrücke)
there's
a
Flohmarkt
(flea
market)
every
Saturday
morning.
